When Your Nervous System Takes Over | Katie Sharpe, LMFT

When your nervous
system takes over.

20 questions, about 5 minutes.

When we feel threatened, in conflict, under stress, or in moments where something important feels at risk, our nervous system responds automatically, before we have a chance to think. These responses aren’t choices. They’re survival strategies, hardwired into our biology long before we had words for them.

Most people are familiar with fight or flight. Less known are freeze, the system’s shutdown response when fight and flight aren’t enough, and fawn, the strategy of appeasing and accommodating to make a threat safe.

All four are normal. All four have a logic. Over time, we tend to develop one or two go-to responses that our nervous system reaches for most reliably under stress. You may recognize yourself clearly in one, or find that two feel equally familiar depending on the context or relationship. Both are worth understanding.

There are no wrong answers. Just rate each statement based on how you actually are, not how you’d like to be.
