High-Functioning Anxiety Therapy in Walnut Creek
You’re not falling apart. On paper, you’re doing well. Capable, accomplished, the one other people count on. But underneath, your mind doesn’t stop. You over-prepare, over-deliver, and still lie awake running the list.
Your anxiety may not even look like anxiety to the people around you. It may just look like competence. That’s exactly why it’s gone unaddressed for so long. It’s time for you to no longer feel alone in your anxiety and fears.
What it looks like
How high-functioning anxiety actually shows up
It rarely looks like panic. Most of the time it looks like this:
A mind that won’t switch off, even when nothing is wrong.
Over-preparing, over-functioning, and finding it hard to hand anything off.
Perfectionism. A bar for yourself you’d never hold anyone else to.
Trouble resting without guilt. Slowing down feels like falling behind.
Irritability, physical tension, trouble falling or staying asleep.
Achievement that quiets the anxiety for a moment, then quietly resets the bar higher.
Underneath, this usually isn’t a thinking problem. It’s a nervous system that learned to stay switched on and never got the signal that it’s safe to stop.
Why it has not shifted
You already understand it. That hasn’t changed it.
You may already know where your anxiety comes from. That’s the frustrating part. The insight hasn’t touched it.
High-functioning anxiety isn’t an official diagnosis, but it’s a pattern clinicians recognize and describe by name: looking capable on the outside while carrying real dread and self-doubt underneath. Recognizing the underlying anxiety in yourself unfortunately doesn’t make it going away.
High-functioning anxiety doesn’t live in the thinking mind. It lives in the body, in automatic responses that fire before thought has a chance to catch up. Understanding a pattern and being able to interrupt it are two different skills. My work is built around the second one, training the actual capacity to catch it in your body, in real time, and respond differently.
The approach
Changing the pattern, not managing it.
My work is active and somatic. Rather than only helping you understand your anxiety, or handing you coping tools to white-knuckle it, we work directly with the nervous system state underneath it.
We get specific about your triggers, build your capacity to catch it in real time, and practice a different response together in the room, until a calmer baseline starts to feel less like effort and more like you.
The goal isn’t to manage your anxiety more efficiently. It’s to change what generates it. See the full approach
Who this is for
This work fits if you’re
High-functioning on the outside and wired tight on the inside.
Capable and growth-oriented. You take insight and actually apply it.
Navigating a demanding career, high expectations, or creeping burnout.
Ready for depth work rather than short-term crisis management.
If you’re in immediate distress, this isn’t the right starting place, and I’m glad to help point you toward the right resource. You can find crisis lines on my resources page.
Where else it shows up
Anxiety rarely stays in one lane
High-functioning anxiety is often the state sitting underneath other things too. We work with it wherever it’s actually showing up in your life.

Common questions
Questions people ask before reaching out
What is high-functioning anxiety?
High-functioning anxiety isn’t a formal diagnosis. It describes people whose anxiety shows up as over-preparing, over-performing, and constant mental activity rather than visible panic or avoidance. From the outside it reads as competence and reliability. On the inside it feels like never being allowed to stop.
Do I need therapy if I’m still functioning well?
Functioning well and feeling well aren’t the same thing. Most of my clients are performing at a high level and are exhausted by what it costs them to keep doing it. You don’t need to be in crisis to deserve support, and waiting until you are usually makes the work harder.
How is this different from regular anxiety treatment?
A lot of anxiety treatment focuses on managing symptoms through coping tools or challenging anxious thoughts. Those help, but they work at the level of thinking. My approach is somatic, which means we work with the nervous system state underneath the thoughts, so the response itself starts to change rather than being managed more efficiently.
How long does this kind of therapy take?
This is depth work, not a short-term protocol, and the honest answer depends on how long the pattern has been running and what you want to change. Most clients start weekly. We talk openly about progress as we go, and you’ll have a clear sense of whether it’s working well before we’re far into it.
Do you offer online therapy for anxiety?
Yes. I see clients in person in Walnut Creek and by telehealth throughout California. Somatic work translates well to video, and for a lot of high-functioning clients the flexibility is what makes therapy possible at all.
